Year Round Safety Tips

  • Replace the batteries in your smoke detector at least twice a year.
  • Plan and practice an escape route for all occupants in your house in the event of fire.
  • Familiarize relatives, babysitters, and guests with your escape route.
  • Do not leave kitchens unattended when cooking.
  • Properly place fire extinguishers and familiarize your family in their use.
  • Do not leave burning cigarettes unattended and do not smoke in bed.
  • Properly dispose of cigarette butts.
  • Do not overload electrical outlets and use only properly maintained cords.

    Spring/Summer Safety Tips

  • Store chemicals and combustibles in approved containers.
  • Do not store incompatible chemicals and combustibles together.
  • Never leave a barbeque grill unattended and use only in open, ventilated areas.
  • Do not use unapproved materials to ignite barbeque grills.
  • Only adults should properly handle legal fireworks in areas free from combustibles.
  • Properly discard cigarettes.
  • Open burning is not allowed in Jefferson County.

    It is reported that 90% of automobile child restraint systems are not properly installed.
